Description
of seeds belonging to the Angiospermae
Vaccinium myrtillus L. bilberry (Ericaceae) After soaking the fruits and removing their pulp, the seeds can be extracted and then dried for storing. The seeds do not fall into a state of dormancy, but their germinating energy may be stimulated by a couple of weeks of vernalization. Sow in the spring.
Viburnum lantana L. Wayfaring tree (Caprifoliaceae) The dormancy of these seeds is rather complex, and there are no known methods which are completely effective in interrupting it. Sow in the summer straight after the seed harvest, which should be carried out before the seeds are completely mature, or in the spring with more mature seeds, after cold stratification for 2-3.5 months. The duration of vernalization is conditioned by the provenance of the seeds. The stratification should be checked frequently, since the seeds germinate at relatively low temperatures.
Vitex agnus-castus L. chaste tree (Verbenaceae) The seeds germinate easily without any treatment. Sow in the spring.
Wisteria sinensis (Sims) Sweet Chinese wisteria (Leguminosae) Germination occurs easily, but can be stimulated by slight mechanical scarification or by soaking for one day in hot water (as per Acacia spp.). Sow in the spring. Vegetative propagation common.
Zizyphus jujuba Miller (Rhamnaceae) The woody endocarp (bone) of the fruit is usually sown, which normally contains 2 seeds. It is a good idea to remove the pulp first by soaking the fruit, and then carry out autumn sowing or spring sowing with seeds which have been stratified in the cold, in sand or other material, for 60-90 days. The ideal temperature for germination is+25°c. ![]() Seeds of Zizyphus jujuba |
